Climbing Mount Aragats: a practical guide
Mount Aragats is the highest mountain in Armenia, and one of the most rewarding climbs in the region.
The mountain
Aragats is a vast extinct volcano. Its crater rim has broken into four summits: northern, western, eastern and southern. The northern summit, at 4,090 m, is the highest point in Armenia.
Which summit to choose
The southern summit is the most popular and the most accessible. It is usually climbed as a long day hike, starting from the area around Lake Kari, which can be reached by road. The route is steep and rocky but not technical in summer conditions.
The northern summit is higher and more demanding, with longer distances, snowfields and loose terrain. It is best attempted with mountain experience or a local guide.
When to go
The usual climbing season is July to September, when most of the snow has melted. Outside these months, snow and ice cover much of the mountain. Weather changes quickly at altitude, and afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer, so start early and turn back if clouds build up.
What to bring
Sturdy hiking boots, warm and waterproof layers, a hat and gloves, sunglasses and strong sun protection, plenty of water and food, and a map or GPS track. Above 3,000 m you may feel the altitude; go slowly and drink often.
Staying safe
Tell someone your route and expected return time, check the weather forecast the evening before, and never hike alone on the higher summits. If you are not an experienced mountain walker, go with a guide.
