The trailhead is next door

Mount Aragats is a vast extinct volcano with four summits around a deep crater. The northern summit, at 4,090 m, is the highest point in Armenia, and the classic way up starts in Aragats village: a jeep track climbs to around 2,900–3,000 m near the Gegharot waterfall, and the hike begins there.

On the other side of the mountain, Lake Kari (about 3,200 m) and the medieval Amberd fortress make an easy day out by car. Whatever you choose, our team arranges the guide, the driver or the jeep, and in the evening you come back to a hot shower, the sauna and dinner.

Mountain sense

  • Sturdy shoes and a warm, waterproof layer, even in summer
  • Strong sun protection: the sun is fierce at altitude
  • Start early: afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer
  • Above 3,000 m, go slowly and drink often
  • Never go alone on the higher summits; tell someone your route

Questions

Mountain trips: good to know

Can the hotel arrange a mountain guide?

Yes. Tell us your dates and the trip you have in mind, and we will arrange a local guide, a car with a driver or a 4x4 on request. Prices depend on the route and the size of your group.

When is the best time to climb Mount Aragats?

The usual season for the summits is July to September, when most of the snow has melted. Outside these months snow and ice cover much of the mountain; meadow walks and car trips are possible from late spring to autumn.

Do I need climbing experience?

Not for meadow walks, the jeep trips or the day trip to Lake Kari and Amberd. The southern summit is a long, steep but non-technical day hike; the northern summit is more demanding and best done with a guide.

How far is Lake Kari from the hotel?

Lake Kari is on the southern side of the mountain. By car it takes around an hour and a half each way, via Ashtarak and Byurakan.
